Big, Westley Neal—The Unstoppable Force

Good afternoon Westley, I’ve watched you play in your 2019 Spring Football game and you were all over the field! You were unstoppable! What makes you ‘tick’ when you line up across from your opponent?

My size, my aggressiveness and my speed. People don’t think that I can move that well because of my size when I’m on the field. Little do they know, they’ll soon find out.

How old where you when you first started playing Pee Wee Football?

I was about five years old when I started playing football .

I have practically known you for most of your life, you always were a big kid, how were you able to make the required weight in order to play in the Pop Warner football games?

Honestly, I’ve never made the weight until  my last two years which was the seventh grade. The league made it unlimited weight. So, I just basically had to run every year and loss about twenty pounds.

So, with the unlimited weight, were you able to play a skill position, like a running back or line backer?

No, just offense or defense of line.

Why were you not allowed?

Because, I was too big and someone might get hurt (Westley laughs).

Who are your parents?

My parents are La Toya Williams and Westley Neal.

What part of town did you grow up in?

I grew up in South Miami, Florida.

What was it like growing up in South Miami?

It was good, things happen here but over all it is a good community to grow up in.

What are some of the activities that you do in South Miami?

I work out with weights, hang out with my friends, play football and basketball things like that.

So, I see that you can play more than one sport.

Yes, I participate in Track and Field. I also participate in Discus and Shot Put, and I’m pretty good at it.

How old are you and what’s your classification?

I am 17 and I am going to be a senior this coming season.

What school do you attend?

I attend Gulliver Prep.

How was your transition from Pop Warner Football to high school football?

It was tough because being a big kid on the park, you are the man. But once you get to high school it’s a different level because everyone is big. So, that changed.

What’s your favorite meal?

My favorite meal is Chick Fil-a. I love it. I would eat it everyday if I could; and it’s pretty healthy.

Westley what is your weight and height? How much weight can you bench press and how much weight can you squat?

Right now, I’m around 307 Lb and I’m 6’ft, the last time I maxed out on the bench press was 430lbs and I can squat 570lbs.

You’re a beast in the weight room.

Yes, I love the weight room.

What position do you play?

I play Defensive Tackle.

When did the light come on that you knew you could compete on a high school football level?

It had to be at the end of my freshman year. My freshman year was rough because I was not that big compared to high schoolers. So, I just stayed in the weight room and motivated myself and I stayed dedicated and that’s when things changed.

What or who inspires you to play high school football?

My Mom, definitely my Mom. She has been my number 1 supporter since I was five. She has never missed a game since I was five. She’s the one that keeps me going.

Who is the professional defensive player that you emulate your game after?

Quinny Williams and Aron Donovan.

What is your favorite defensive tactic or move against your opponent.

Oh, that’s hard, I like the Bull Rush. I just like it because I am overpowering my opponent. If I can’t Bull Rush you, then I like the Swim move. I sometimes use the Rip and sometimes I use the Spin Move.

Where did you get that Spin Move from?

I got it from my former teammate Manny Alonzo; he taught me the Spin Move in my sophomore year. Manny now attends Virginia University.

What goals have you set for your 2019 season?

My goals to win the State Championship. I haven’t won a State Championship since I got to high school. So, hopefully this is the year.

Do you guys have a pretty good team?

We always have a pretty good team. We have never had the depth and now that we have the depth and a better team, I think that we can make it this year.

What opponent has been giving your team a difficultly  challenge?

University school, it’s up in the Broward County area. They are pretty good. We always have a challenging game when we play them.

Who are some of the D1 colleges that are showing an interest in you?

University of Miami, Indiana, Pitt, Florida State, Florida, Louisville, West Virginia, FIU, FAU, and a few others.

So, how does that affect your ego?

It doesn’t, I am the same person with or with out the offers. You just have to stay humble.

Who is your number one fan or fans?

My Mom and my little cousin LJ. They’re at every game. They are the only two people that I hear during the game. They are louder than the whole crowd.

What about Uncle Laren?

He comes to some games and he just yells out my name out of no where. Like whenever I am lacking, he yells out, “Hey ,Wes, lets go!” Then, I look in the stands and I see all of them and I go crazy after that.

By the way, do your teammates know that you are musically inclined and that you play the trumpet very well?

I don’t think that they know that. If they did they would look at me differently. They would laugh because they don’t think that a big guy can play a trumpet. But I played the trumpet my eighth grade year. After my sophomore year I got braces and I couldn’t play any more.

Yes, I recall attending one of your family members Sweet 16 functions in which you and some of your band classmates participated in the function; and there you were center stage playing your trumpet. I must say that I was very impressed by your performance.

What would you tell those young football players  that look up to you?

I would tell them to stay motivated. You can’t get discouraged when you don’t have offers and all these things that are coming your way; you just got to pray and stay humble. You have to keep your mind on your books because you can’t play football without the grades. Definitely you have to get your grades first and then everything else will fall into place.

Westley, Sports Elite thanks you for sharing. We wish that you have a Block Buster Season.
