Isaiah McKenzie Georgia Bull Dogs The Human Joy Stick

Isaiah what year were you born?

I was born April 9, 1995

Do you have any siblings?
Yes, I have 4 brothers and 1 sister.

What city did you grow up in as a child?

I grew up in the City of Miami Gardens.

What was your most favorable moment growing up in Miami Gardens as a child?McKenzie

I would say playing football in the community park across the street from my home.

How old were you when you started playing organized  football?

I was 9 years old.

What was the name of the team that you played for.

I played for Golden Glades Panthers.

What position did you played.

I played a number of positions, receiver, corner back and running back. I played a little bit of everything.

So you were pretty much an athlete.

Growing up in North Miami Gardens, what did you to to occupy your free time?

I worked out and played with the kids, because I was a kid, I didn’t take it to serious. I didn’t want to go to fast. But sooner or later I had get to working.

Do you have any other sports that you excel in?

I ran track. I ran the 100, 200, 4×100 and 4×4.

What high school did you attend and what year did you graduate?

I attended American Heritage High School in Plantation Florida. I graduated in 2014.

What was it like playing high school football?

It was very exciting, I was one of the top players on my high school team.

What position did you play?

I played receiver.

After completing a successful high school career what universities showed an interest in you?

I had over 37 offers from schools across the country. Some were Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida etc.

How many schools did you visit?

I visited 5 schools.

How did they treat you?

They treated me fairly well, but you know I had to come to one decision and I chose University of Georgia.

Georgia vs. VanderbiltWhat won you over in selecting Georgia?

Georgia, it was closer to home and this would give my family the opportunity to attend some of my home football games. it was just a great place. Coach Mark Richt is my head coach and he’s a great person. He  gave me the chance to play my freshman year and I like it.

Was that something that the coach promised you?

No, he didn’t promise me. He said that if I come in and worked hard that I would get on the field.

So did he stay true to his word?

Yes, he did.

How was your transition from high school to college?

Football wise, it was nothing new. Player are a little bit bigger and faster.  But I  could keep up. School wise, just time management , knowing when to do home work and turning in assignments when due. You don’t have anyone telling you when assignments are due. So other than that school and football is pretty good.

So, you are a student athlete?

Yes, I am a student athlete.

Being that you are not a big receiver what made you think that you could compete in a D 1 college level football program?

probably, because I am faster than most and even though they are bigger than me, they still have to get their hands on me. I rely on my speed, my quickness and everything like that. I know that I don’t have the size. I rely on my athletic ability to get the job done. I am only 5’ 7”.

But you play like you are 6’ 4”.

What makes you different from other wide receivers?

I get compared to a lot of receivers, but I would say going over the top of a defense. My route running could be a little better, I have good hands. But what separates me is after the catch, I could make something happen.

What was it like to play with wide receiver Chris Conley?

Playing with him was  great. He taught me how to run pass routes. He is also a great person. He taught me how to keep things in perspective.

How exciting was it to score your first Kick return?

Very exciting, www were playing against Troy and it was a punt return at the moment I was feeling lucky and the ball bounced in front of me and I just took it and ran for a touch down. But it was very exciting to get the fans pumped up.

So, does football come easily to you.

Yes, it’s natural.

How is your 2015  team looking?

It’s looking very good. We have a lot of great players on our team like Nick Chubb Mitchell and we got Malcolm Mitchell. Our defense is looking pretty good and we have a great coaching staff. We should do pretty good this year.

What type of relationship do you and your head coach have?

It’s was kind of a crazy relationship, in the beginning things were rough between the two of us. We barely got to know each other as well as we do now. Everything is great now, I like him as a person and as a coach and he likes me as a person and a player.

What are you doing to prepare yourself for the 2015 season?

I got home May 5 and I have been working on my speed and strengthening my hamstrings and lifting weights here and there. I’m not trying to gain too much weight. I like to stay at 175lbs. I am just getting ready for my work outs and practice.

During the summer time, how often do you practice?

We practice everyday during camp, it’s Monday through Sunday, it’s hard  2 a days, you just have to fight through it.

How is the meal plan?

.The meal plan is good they feed us well.web1_0921_GDP_UGAvsTroy-6_t300

Who is your role model?

That’s kind of hard to say, I look up to my grandmother a lot because how she grew up and how  she raised me. My Grandmother raised me  well.

Football role models, I have a lot of them, Tedren Austin, Steve Smith, Santana Moss and Devon Hester. Devon Hester is the special team player that I am trying to immolate my game after. I like his style of play. He has about 20 NFL returns for touch downs. I am hoping that I can get 10 returns.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

I would say, that if God is willing I would like to be in the NFL Draft. If that does not work out I am studying Marine Biology. I am planning on owning my own aquarium or travel the world and do research. Those are my two plans right now.

Isaiah this completes our interview, Sports Elite thanks you for sharing your football journey. May God continue to bless you.I look forward in seeing you play in the 2015 football season.
